Genelec Artist Room Welcomes Julie

We were delighted to welcome G SongLab participant Julie into the Genelec Artist Room recently to perform her beautiful song ‘Fade Away’.

Aged just seventeen, Julie comes from Vantaa in Finland and has been writing songs since she was thirteen.

“I have always been surrounded by music,” says Julie. “My sister got me into playing piano when I was nine, but my interest in making music started when I got accepted to a music orientated class in my third year at primary school. I figured that music was a way for me to express myself as an individual.”

Speaking about the powerful and expressive Fade Away, Julie is incredibly modest. “The lyrics kind of just came into my head and onto the paper. The song expresses what I felt at the time and I wasn’t really thinking that it would become the song that it is today,” she reveals.

The G SongLab initiative offers young people free access to a safe on-line learning community, through which they can collaborate and engage with others in developing their skills in songwriting and music creation.

Led by a team of songwriters and music educators led by Petter Korkman and Anna Kuoppamäki, the project allows young songwriters aged between 13 and 29 to participate from the comfort of their homes and share their songs with others.

“When I first joined G SongLab, it taught me that even if you don’t know what to write about, you can always write something even if the result doesn’t make any sense,” Julie comments. “I suffered from writer’s block last year and the methods I learnt helped me through it.”
